How to build a Holz Hausen...

If you drive past my house in St Abit, south west France, you'll see our Holz Hausen. Over the years we've had quite a few passers by stop to ask us about them.

We needed a way of stocking a lot of wood in a small space and so this seemed like a perfect solution;

I stumbled over the idea on you tube, or was it John who found it? Anyway we watched this video and decided to give it a try.

Our Holz Hausen is neither as neat nor well stacked as this one but it serves our purpose very well. The wood keeps dry with just a cover on the very top. The air circulates well throughout the pile of wood.

One thing worth mentioning is that it is difficult to get the wood from the very top when its a blowy, rainy day in winter. You do have to think ahead and retrieve your wood when the sun is shining.

At the moment we have 2 of them, having just finished the second one at the weekend, so we are all set for a long cold winter!
